In Becoming Bulletproof, Evy Poumpouras shares a powerful insight: “If everything in your life is important, then nothing is.” It’s a quote that stops you in your tracks because, in a world that demands our attention at every turn, how often do we step back and ask ourselves—what is truly important?
I’ve always believed that when something matters to us, we make time for it. Even on our busiest days, we prioritize people and things that hold a special place in our lives. Yet, it’s easy to fall into the trap of overloading ourselves, treating every task, every commitment, as if it’s of equal importance. But life doesn’t work that way. Not everything can, or should, be at the top of our list.
When we look at our daily routines, we often assign value without thinking. We wake up early or stay up late for work, exercise, or self-care because we recognize their impact on our well-being. But there are moments when these routines must adapt—when a friend reaches out, or a family member needs us. These people become our priorities, and in those moments, they become more important than our to-do lists. However, even as we adjust, it’s crucial to balance helping others with honoring our own needs, creating healthy boundaries rather than sacrificing ourselves entirely.
This quote resonates because it calls us to look closely at our choices. Each decision we make fulfills a need, consciously or not. The challenge is to ensure we’re meeting our needs, not just living to fulfill obligations or satisfy others’ expectations. Are we prioritizing things that feed our souls, our relationships, and our growth? Or are we swept up in a cycle of busyness, missing what truly matters?
Reflecting on your own life, ask yourself: What, or who, do you choose to make time for, even on the busiest days? And are those things truly the most important?
